Brief Description (Abstract):

As a part of the International Polar Year project, meteorological data from NCEP-NCAR and ECMWF numerical weather forecasts (NWFs), QuikSCAT winds and AMSR-E sea surface temperature (SST) in the surface atmospheric boundary layer have been validated by using ship-based data collected in the southwest Indian Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean during the 26th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica. The NWFs overestimate mean sea level pressure by ?5 to ?12 mb. The root-mean-square difference (rmsd) ranges from 1.7 to 2.3 mb and the regression yields a high correlation coefficient (r) exceeding 0.9, significant at 1% level. Validation of NWF air temperature yields a rmsd of 0.8 ?C and r exceeding 0.9. Relative humidity from NWFs is underestimated by 3%, and the data fail to capture sporadic events in the midlatitudes. The QuikSCAT winds are underestimates by 1.3 m s?1 and show a large bias south of 50?S.

Purpose: This paper addresses the analysis of meteorological data collected during the 26th ISEA on board MV Emerald Sea from Durban to India Bay, Antarctica during 9?14 February 2007 (Track?1) and from Prydz Bay, Antarctica to Mauritius during 19?26 March 2007 (Track-2). In particular, we elucidate large-scale meteorological features identified along the two tracks, and validate the satellite and numerical weather forecasts (NWF). Though the data points are few, it is hoped that this work would help in understanding the extremes in the ABL conditions in the SO and the validation would serve as one of the point of reference India?s OCEANSAT?II mission scheduled to be launched in 2009 with a Scatterometer for measuring ocean-surface wind and Ocean Color Monitor for biophysical studies.
