Abstract
The marine science community of Australia has established a representative national committee to co-ordinate and lead efforts to improve understanding of regional and basin-scale phenomena influencing the SE Indian Ocean and Australia. Numerous and ongoing and new research projects are included under the umbrella of the six themes of the IIOE-2. The Integrated Marine Observing System provides sustained observations in the region and will continue during the Expedition. A variety of science platforms including Australia's new blue-water vessel RV Investigator and a fleet of smaller coastal vessels will enable process studies to be conducted and provide opportunities for remote sensing and modelling activities. Existing and planned research during the Expedition includes oceanographic, geological and biodiversity studies in the macro-tidal Kimberley region, Indonesian Through Flow monitoring, Bio-Argo observations, a repeat visit to the 110oE line, participation in the multi-national Eastern Indian Ocean Upwelling Research Initiative, tropho-dynamics of the Ninety East Ridge, climate and sea-level studies, ecological efforts at Ningaloo Reef and shelf-edge canyons, investigation of the Great Australian Bight ecosystem and ongoing monitoring activities in meteorology, fisheries and marine conservation reserves. The Australian marine science community welcomes opportunities for collaborative, multi-national science during 2016-2020 and looks forward to the international community community focussing their efforts in the Indian Ocean
