Training course on "Indian Ocean Currents : Data, Processing and Applications"
during November 7-11, 2016
Organized by
International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOocean)
ESSO-INCOIS, Hyderabad, India

Background

Oceans affect weather patterns by playing major role in the Earth's climate system. For the considerably longer periods - decades to millennia - which are relevant for climate change, the significantly larger heat capacity of the deep ocean is important. Ocean currents and mixing by winds and waves can transport and redistribute heat to deeper ocean layers. It can reside in this deep reservoir for centuries, further stabilizing the Earth's climate and slowing the effects of climate change. Ocean currents transport and redistribute heat and salt. Both play an important role in driving the planetary climate engine. Of particular importance are the western boundary currents (e.g., Gulf Stream and Kuroshio Current) and eastern boundary undercurrents (e.g., California Undercurrent), which transport heat from the tropics toward the poles, effectively acting as the ocean's "great conveyor belt". Fluctuations in the transport of these currents alter the rate that heat is redistributed through the oceans. Sudden shifts in these currents are thought to have initiated past ice ages.

Ocean currents can be measured using Drifting buoys, Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCPs), Current Meter Mooring and HF Radars. While these instruments give data a point locations the spatial distribution of currents can be obtained from Altimeters. There are several ADCPs installed all along the coasts of India and maintained by NIO, Goa. In recent years, ESSO-NIOT has installed and managing about 5 pairs of HF Radars covering east and west coast, that are reporting high resolution currents on real time to INCOIS. Data from these ADCPs and HF Radars are archived at INCOIS and are being used for many scientific studies and validation of model outputs. In this course, we intent to introduce the basics of the processing, quality control and analysis of currents from ADCPs and HF Radars. The potential applications demonstrating use of the current data sets will be highlighted.
