Seminar on
"Resilient Oceans: role of mankind"
11th  March 2024 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM IST
Organized by
International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOocean)
ESSO-INCOIS, Hyderabad, India

ABOUT THE TALK:

Resilience is the ability to withstand adversity and bounce back (Elasticity/Carrying Capacity/Tenacity) from different life event. Most of the Continental Margin is covered within the EEZ and therefore deposits of Sand & Gravel, Placers, Phosphorites and Hydrocarbons are within the Continental Margin and the Countries/Coastal States have exclusive rights. Exclusive Economic Zone covers up to 200 nautical miles from the coast. Ocean basins are Are covered mostly covered by Abyssal Plains, Mid-Oceanic Ridges. These areas are covered by Potential Deposits of Manganese Nodules (also called “Polymetallic Nodules), Cobal-rich Crusts, Hydrothermal Sulphide. Over the last 50 years, many new tools have been developed to measure the ocean and its role in the overall climate system including satellite remote sensing and robotic platforms of many types. Numerical models now assimilate some of this data to provide a real time unified view of the ocean. How do we best use these new tools to improve our understanding of the ocean and thus our predictions of both local oceanography and climate? The talk will provide an overview of the tools, with an emphasis on some the new robotic tools and describe a recent oceanographic campaign designed to use them to improve models.

This talks covers about evolution of Law of the Sea, foundation for Maritime Zones, progressive Laws of the sea, Deep Sea Mineral Resources etc. The talk also convers the concerns of various nations and the reasons for the formation of International Seabed Authority (ISA) and how ISA’s formation made a big difference. It also covered the Indian efforts for Cobalt-rich Crusts on Afanasiy-Nikitin Seamounts. Finally the talk introduced the New Governance of Biological Resources in Oceans beyond National Jurisdiction “BBNJ” as adopted by the United Nations.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Dr. Maruthadu Sudhakar has 37 years of experience in Oceanography and the Law of the Sea, beginning in 1982. He represented India in various organs of the United Nations. He has earned his Ph.D. in Applied Geology (Marine Geology and Seabed Resources), at the Indian Institute of Technology (ISM), Dhanbad.

Registration Process:
